Healthy KidsThe South Carolina Department of Education, in collaboration with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, understands the critical link between academic achievement and being healthy and works to improve the health status of youth. The South Carolina Department of Education supports these efforts by collaborating with schools and school districts to promote local-level decision making on health education, build youth assets, and enhance the involvement of families and communities. South Carolina receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

South Carolina's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Providing professional development for training cadre members on effective research-based PANT programs and policies.

  • Providing training, resources, funding, and technical assistance regarding PANT to selected school districts disproportionately affected by chronic disease.

  • Collaborating with the South Carolina Association of School Administrators to develop a School Health Leadership Institute for school and health department administrators.

  • Collaborating with the South Carolina Office of Youth Services Youth Advisory Board to solicit youth recommendations for PANT program design and planning efforts.

  • Collaborating with Eat Smart, Move More South Carolina to develop a model School Wellness Policy.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Maintaining a HIV prevention education training cadre to provide training, resources, and technical assistance to school districts disproportionately affected by HIV, STIs, and adolescent pregnancy.

  • Providing HIV prevention education training to new South Carolina teachers.

  • Providing training and assistance in HIV prevention education to community organizations that focus on addressing the needs of young African American males.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect health risk behavior data representative of South Carolina students in middle and high school.

  • Disseminating and promoting the use of the YRBS data with state and local stakeholders.

  • Collaborating with other state agencies to develop recommendations for using multiple data sets, including the YRBS, to improve student health and academics.
