Healthy KidsOhio’s Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Health. Ohio receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The overarching goal for the Ohio CSHP is to build a state-level infrastructure that encompasses inter-agency leadership, policy coordination, and technical assistance to support the implementation of CSHPs and the promotion of physical activity, healthy eating, and tobacco-use prevention in school districts and schools.

Ohio's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Establishing a state-level, inter-agency leadership team to align efforts, maximize resources, and avoid duplication in support of CSHPs.

  • Conducting a comprehensive assessment of existing data, policies, programs, and practices that support CSH to allow for services to be integrated, duplications to be minimized, and resources to be maximized.

  • Developing and disseminating model policies, policy guidance, and relevant policy materials addressing PANT to school districts and schools.

  • Distributing curricular standards, instructional strategies, and tools that promote PANT to districts and schools.

  • Providing professional development for districts, schools, and community partners to increase knowledge and skills needed to implement effective policies, programs, and practices aimed at promoting physical activity, healthy eating, and tobacco-use prevention.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Collaborating with partners to develop a 5-year HIV prevention strategic plan to guide all future programmatic efforts.

  • Convening up to six meetings with HIV prevention stakeholders from across the state to inform future HIV prevention education programs, policies, and practices.

  • Creating an HIV advisory committee to provide guidance on HIV prevention education program planning and implementation, including use of curricula and HIV prevention education resources.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS in Ohio high schools, through a collaborative effort between Ohio’s Department of Health and Department of Education, to obtain data representative of students in grades 9-12.

  • Conducting site visits with school administrators to discuss the process for collecting YRBS data and the importance of using the data to inform future program planning.

  • Developing a comprehensive YRBS report and behavior-specific fact sheets and disseminating the materials to partners, decision makers, and parents.
