Healthy KidsThe New Jersey Department of Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goals of the CSHP program are to increase the number of schools implementing effective Coordinated School Health Programs and promoting physical activity, healthy eating, and tobacco use prevention. The goal of the New Jersey HIV prevention education program is to prevent HIV infection among youth by providing opportunities for technical assistance and professional development for instructional staff in the state’s public schools and juvenile justice facilities. The New Jersey Department of Education focuses resources specifically on schools in geographic regions of the state with relatively high rates of HIV or STDs and on populations for which there is evidence of disproportionate risk

New Jersey's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Providing technical assistance to school staff and administrators on school wellness policies, culturally and developmentally appropriate school health materials, and elements of effective professional development.

  • Working with the Learning Partner Districts to identify and prioritize opportunities for increasing physical activity, improving food choices, and preventing or reducing tobacco use.

  • Piloting CSHPs in school districts with high rates of physical inactivity, unhealthy eating, and tobacco use among students.

  • Providing technical assistance to schools and districts regarding compliance with state requirements for the New Jersey Model School Nutrition Policy and federal requirements for local wellness policies.

  • Developing and disseminating a competitive Request for Applications (RFA) for school districts interested in developing and implementing a CSHP.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Providing technical assistance and professional development on strengthening school policies, programs, and practices to teachers in middle and high schools in areas of the state with elevated rates of HIV and STDs.

  • Providing professional development to school counselors on addressing school policies and practices that stigmatize gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, or questioning (GLBQ) students and providing sexual risk reduction counseling and referrals.

  • Partnering with the New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission (JJC) Office of Education to implement HIV prevention education in the state’s juvenile detention centers.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS in high schools throughout New Jersey to obtain data representative of students in grades 9-12.

  • Recruiting the selected public high schools by conducting site visits to establish rapport with the principal and other school staff likely to be involved in the survey.

  • Developing and disseminating the 2007 New Jersey Student Health Survey summary reports to appropriate stakeholders, including county superintendents of education, chief school administrators, school principals, local health officers, and staff of collaborating state agencies and community-based organizations.
