Healthy KidsThe goal of the Nebraska Department of Education HIV prevention education program is to support local school efforts to integrate educational activities on HIV prevention into the K-12 curriculum and health education programs. Nebraska receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

Nebraska's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Establishing a cadre of trainers to conduct trainings on HIV prevention education policies and programs.

  • Collaborating with local districts and youth serving agencies, particularly those serving youth at high-risk for HIV infection, to support HIV prevention education programs that meet the needs of their communities.

  • Providing technical assistance on policy and curriculum development for teachers implementing HIV/AIDS prevention education.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of Nebraska students in grades 9-12.

  • Disseminating YRBS results through brochures and regional trainings with teachers and school staff.

  • Using YRBS results to inform program planning and policy decisions.
