New York City Department of Education*

Lori Benson
Director, Office of Fitness and Health Education

Asthma Management Coordinator—Position currently vacant

Healthy AdolescentsThe New York City (NYC) Department of Education in New York receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to implement an asthma management program, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goals of the NYC Department of Education’s HIV prevention program include increasing the number of staff who are trained to provide HIV/AIDS instruction within a comprehensive health education program, ensuring that students are learning skills that enable them to prevent risk behaviors, and monitoring critical health behaviors through the YRBS. The goals of the NYC Asthma Support Services in Schools and Transitional housing (NYC ASSIST) project are to improve identification, connection to treatment, and care coordination for children with asthma living in transitional housing and attending NYC public schools; and to reduce emergency room visits, hospitalization, and school absences among this population.

New York City's Program In Action

Asthma Management

  • Providing training and technical assistance to school nurses and other professional staff to increase the skills of students and families in managing asthma, with a focus on reaching students living in transitional housing and homeless shelters.

  • Partnering with the NYC Asthma Training Institute to provide asthma training for school administrators and teachers to promote asthma-supportive school environments.

  • Partnering with the NYC American Lung Association to train school nurses on conducting Open Airways for Schools asthma self-management programs for students with asthma.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Conducting citywide professional development for administrators, teachers, and other school staff on the updated HIV/AIDS curriculum, related policies, and teaching strategies, with an emphasis on reaching the highest-risk neighborhoods in the city.

  • Conducting trainings for parent coordinators to introduce them to district HIV prevention curricula, related policies, and strategies that can be used when communicating with their children about HIV/AIDS.

  • Developing and implementing a tracking system to ensure all schools comply with city policies for HIV prevention education, measure teacher preparedness to teach HIV/AIDS lessons, and identify schools delivering high quality programs.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of NYC students in grades 9–12.

  • Collaborating with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and other community partners to review questions, administer the survey, and analyze and disseminate survey results.

  • Using YRBS data to guide the Department of Education’s program planning and partnerships with other agencies and community-based organizations.
