State Agencies Colorado
Colorado’s
Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between
the Colorado Department of Education and the Colorado Department of Public
Health and Environment. The CSHP works with schools, school districts, local
health departments, governmental agencies, and professional organizations to
improve the health and academic success of Colorado’s children through the
implementation of the CSHP model. Colorado receives funding from CDC’s
Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school
health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk
Behavior Survey (YRBS).
Colorado's Program In Action
Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco
Use Prevention (PANT)
- Developing a cadre of school principals and superintendents who
support coordinated school health and will work to address policy issues
related to PANT.
- Providing professional development for school administrators and
other key decision makers on coordinated school health and the link
between health and education.
- Leading multiple Interagency School Health Team committees to
address priorities from Colorado Connections for Healthy Schools: A
2010 State Plan for Coordinated School Health.
- Updating and disseminating model wellness and tobacco-free schools
policies in collaboration with the Colorado Association of School
Boards.
-
Providing professional development on effective policies and practices
for promoting PANT, especially for teachers serving youth with
disproportionately high rates of obesity and tobacco use.
Providing HIV
Prevention Education
- Partnering with the Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment, local health agencies, school districts, and
community-based organizations to promote the implementation of effective
HIV/AIDS/STD prevention education.
- Involving parents and youth in program planning and ensuring they
have the tools to effectively partner with schools to obtain HIV
prevention resources.
- Providing training and culturally appropriate education to youth at
highest risk for HIV infection.
Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Collecting data that are representative of youth in grades 9 −12
across the state through a collaborative effort between Colorado’s
Department of Education and Department of Public Health and Environment.
- Distributing information collected from the YRBS to statewide
agencies, members of the statewide school health consortium, district
staff, and community-based organizations.
- Using the YRBS results to guide the development of policies and
programs aimed at reducing risk behaviors and improving the health of
school-age youth.
