Healthy AdolescentsArizona’s Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between the Arizona Department of Education and the Arizona Department of Health. Arizona receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The mission of the Arizona Safety and Prevention Unit is to enhance academic achievement for all Arizona youth by providing resources for safe and healthy learning environments.

Arizona's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Coordinating a statewide coalition of public and private partners in health and education to strengthen PANT efforts.

  • Conducting a needs assessment to determine school district training needs and inform CSHP activities.

  • Implementing the Tools for Healthy Schools - CSHP Best Practices Conference to provide schools with tools and strategies for promoting CSHP and PANT activities and improving academic achievement.

  • Providing data and resource information to legislators, school districts, and the public regarding the health status of Arizona youth.

  • Evaluating progress toward building capacity, conducting staff development, implementing health and physical education standards, and disseminating resource materials.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Providing professional development events and resources for school health educators on implementing evidence-based HIV prevention education.

  • Partnering with the Arizona Parent-Teacher Association to provide trainings for local school districts on how to improve parent-child communication about HIV infection and other sensitive issues.

  • Maintaining the Arizona Adolescent School Health Listserv to communicate trainings, up-to-date research, funding announcements, and professional development opportunities.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS in high schools throughout Arizona to obtain data representative of students in grades 9−12.

  • Creating a brochure and a report to communicate YRBS results.

  • Disseminating the YRBS results report and brochure to stakeholders across the state.
