Fires in Northern Australia
Dozens of active fire detections (red dots) were made across Northern Australia on September 3, 2003, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite. The scene shows Western Australia (left) and Northern Territory (right). Much of the land in this part of the country is rangeland or farmland, and these fires are likely planned burns that have been set as part of a natural resource management strategy. The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at MODIS’ maximum spatial resolution of 250 meters.
