    Cruise Ship's Corrective Action Statement

Site: Potable Water-
Violation: The vessel was producing potable water for a distillate tank that was to be used for technical purposes. Potable water was produced by these same systems. There was no backflow protection provided.
Recommendation: Ensure that the potable water distribution system is maintained free of cross-connections with non-potable piping systems and tanks.

Violation: The reduced pressure assembly test results were not adequately recorded. The vessel had a new test kit and the recording results were different from that of the old kit.
Recommendation: Ensure that backflow prevention devices requiring testing, for example reduced pressure backflow preventer and double check valves with test cocks, are inspected and tested with a test kit at least annually and that the test results showing the pressure differences on both sides of the valves are maintained for each device.

Site: Potable Water-
Violation: The small diameter potable water lines in the electrician's workshop and the hot water line in the garbage room were not striped or painted blue.
Recommendation: Ensure that potable water piping and fittings are painted or stripped auxiliary blue, or in accordance with ISO 14726, at 5 m (15 feet) intervals on each side of partitions, decks, and bulkheads in all spaces, except where the decor would be marred by such markings.

Violation: Not all of the connections were addressed in the cross-connection control program. The following potable water connections were not listed: four connections in the crew pot wash area; two pray hoses for the crew galley ovens and the pot filling hose; the hose connection in the garbage room to the left of the handwash sink.
Recommendation: Ensure that all of the connections to the potable water system where contamination can occur are listed.

Violation: There was a steady flow of hot water from the vent on the reduced pressure assembly in the deck 12 lido pool room.
Recommendation: Ensure that backflow prevention devices are periodically inspected and any failed units are replaced.

Violation: The vent on the backflow prevention device for the carbonation unit was not pointed in a direction to drain. This was also noted in the deck 15 grill bar.
Recommendation: Ensure that vents for backflow prevention devices are pointed in a direction to drain.

Violation: There was a steady drip at the vent on the backflow prevention device for the hood cleaning system.
Recommendation: Ensure that backflow prevention devices are periodically inspected and any failed units are replaced.

Site: Whirlpool/Spa-Deck 12 Aft Port
Violation: The main drain anti-entrapment drain cover was damaged. There whirlpool was not filled with water.
Recommendation: Ensure that anti-entrapment drain covers or other drains that prevent entrapment hazards as specified in U.S. Consumer Product Safety Publication 363-009801 (dual drains/channel drains) are provided on swimming pools and whirlpool spas. Ensure that drain covers have either the plumbing/engineering approving organization stamp and flow rate affixed to the cover, or that a letter is maintained aboard the vessel certifying that the cover meets the safety requirements outlined in AMSE/ANSI A112.19.8M or an equivalent standard.

Site: Whirlpool/Spa-Deck 12 Aft Port
Violation: The main drain anti-entrapment drain cover was damaged. There whirlpool was not filled with water.
Recommendation: Replace the drain cover.

Violation: There was no sight glass to see if the backwash water was clear. The clear cover on the top of the filter housing was not clear enough to see if the backwash water was clear. All of the other whirlpools had sight glasses.
Recommendation: Ensure that granular filters are backwashed at least daily. Repeat backwashing, if necessary, until the water viewed through the sight glass or discharge point is clean flowing.

Violation: There was no sight glass to see if the backwash water was clear. The clear cover on the top of the filter housing was not clear enough to see if the backwash water was clear. All of the other whirlpools had sight glasses.
Recommendation: Install a sight glass or clear section of piping so that the clarity of the backwash water can be observed

Site: Galley-Deck 5 Pastry
Violation: The gaskets were missing around the upper glass section of the oven doors ( Unit 052904) resulting in difficult to clean seams and gaps.
Recommendation: Ensure that multiuse food-contact surfaces are: (1) Smooth; (2) Free of breaks, open seams >1 mm (1/32 inch), cracks, chips, inclusions, pits, and similar imperfections; (3) Free of sharp internal angles, corners, and crevices; (4) Finished to have smooth welds and joints; and (5) Accessible for cleaning and inspection by one of the following methods without being disassembled, by disassembling without the use of tools, or by easy disassembling with the use of handheld tools commonly available to maintenance and cleaning personnel such as screwdrivers, pliers, open-end wrenches, and Allen wrenches.

Violation: The interior stainless steel surfaces in the salad dryer were damaged.
Recommendation: Ensure that materials used in the construction of multiuse utensils and food-contact surfaces of equipment are: (1) Durable, corrosion-resistant, and nonabsorbent; (2) Sufficient in weight and thickness to withstand repeated warewashing; (3) Finished to have a smooth, easily cleanable surface; and (4) Resistant to pitting, chipping, crazing, scratching, scoring, distortion, and decomposition.

Violation: A transformer box and wires were on the bottom of the technical compartment, making cleaning difficult.
