This cruise ship inspection report lists the deficiencies found during the inspection. Additional information corresponding to each item number is available in the lastest editions of the CDC VSP Operational Manual.



 
    Cruise Ship's Corrective Action Statement

Item No.: 08
Site: Whirlpool/Spa-
Violation: The technical water tap had blue tape with white lettering indicating that it was technical water. Per the engineer a secondary color, grey, is used to differentiate technical water lines from potable water lines.
Recommendation: Ensure that a secondary color is used to differentiate technical water from potable water.

Site: Potable Water-
Violation: The potable water connections to the steam generators in the spa and the hose connections in the pool/whirlpool mechanical rooms were not listed in the comprehensive cross-connection control program.
Recommendation: Ensure that all of the connections to the potable water system where contamination can occur are listed in the cross-connection control program.

Violation: There were gaps in the record keeping for the production logs. It was not clear if the gaps meant that production had stopped or free chlorine tests were not conducted.
Recommendation: Ensure that accurate records of this monitoring are maintained aboard for 12 months and are available to the VSP for review during inspections.

Recommendation: Ensure that free residual halogen monitoring is performed at least hourly during the bunkering of potable water and performed at least once every 4 hours during the onboard production of potable water.

Violation: The filling line caps were not secured with chains.
Recommendation: Ensure that the potable water filling line has a screw cap or plug fastened by a non-corroding chain to an adjacent bulkhead or surface in such a manner that the cap or plug does not touch the deck when hanging free. The connections for the hose attachments shall be unique and fit only potable water hoses.

Violation: There were loose/raised fasteners on the anti-entrapment drain covers.
Recommendation: Ensure that the fasteners are properly secured to the drain cover.

Site: Swimming Pool-
Violation: TOR-HB was used for disinfection of recreational water facilities after a fecal accident. It was not clear if this product had the same disinfection capabilities as chlorine.
Recommendation: Ensure that a fecal accident response procedure, which meets or exceeds the procedure provided in annex 13.11, is documented and available to the VSP for review during inspections.

Violation: The initial interviews of cabin mates or close contacts of ill crew members were not conducted until the day after the ill crew member presented to medical. Ill crew members were given a sheet of paper instructing the cabins mates to report to medical.
Recommendation: Ensure that the initial interviews of the cabin mates or close personal contacts of ill crew members occur the day the ill crew members first present to medical.

Violation: A crew member was eating grapes inside the cold room.
Recommendation: Ensure that employees eat, drink, or use any form of tobacco only in designated areas where the contamination of exposed food; clean equipment, utensils, and linens; unwrapped single-service and single-use articles; or other items needing protection can not result.

Violation: There was a soup urn on the buffet line that was not under a sneeze shield or otherwise protected. It was not in use at the time.
Recommendation: Ensure that food on display is protected from contamination by the use of packaging; counter, service line, or salad bar food guards; display cases; or other effective means.

Violation: The sneeze guard for the jars of jelly and peanut butter was placed side ways making it ineffective.
Recommendation: Position the sneeze guard to adequately protect the foods.

Violation: There was a tray of cut fruit and a tray of desserts under a plastic lid with a hinged top and not under a sneeze shield.
Recommendation: Ensure that food on display is protected from contamination by the use of packaging; counter, service line, or salad bar food guards; display cases; or other effective means.

Violation: Water was dripping from the deckhead to the deckstand below. There was a cardboard box of packaged bread on the on the deckstand. The cardboard box was wet on the bottom.
Recommendation: Ensure that condensate is not allowed to collect and drip on to packages of food.

Violation: There was a deck mounted soda vending machine located near the crew mess handwash station. The machine was mounted on legs less than two inches above the deck, making cleaning difficult.
Recommendation: Ensure that equipment that is fixed because it is not easily movable is installed so that it is: (1) Spaced to allow access for cleaning along the sides, behind, under and above the equipment; (2) Spaced from adjoining equipment, bulkhead, and deckhead at a distance of not more than 0.8 millimeter or 1/32 inch; or (3) Sealed to adjoining equipment or bulkhead, if the equipment is exposed to spillage or seepage.

Violation: There was excess sealant on the outside of the cabinet doors for the garbage cans, making cleaning difficult.
Recommendation: Ensure that nonfood-contact surfaces of equipment that are exposed to splash, spillage, or other food soiling or that require frequent cleaning are constructed of a corrosion-resistant, nonabsorbent, and smooth material.

Violation: There was water leaking over the top of the dishwash detergent dispenser on the conveyor dishwash machine. It did not appear that the detergent was going into the machine.
Recommendation: Repair this unit.

Violation: Two of the spray nozzles on the final rinse spray arm were clogged and the final rinse spray did not have an effective spray pattern. The final rinse temperature was above 160 degrees F.
Recommendation: Ensure that the spray nozzles are in working order.

Violation: There was food debris and dried liquid in the bottom of two clean utensil storage trays.
Recommendation: Ensure that cleaned equipment and utensils, laundered linens, and single-service and single-use articles are stored: (1) In a clean, dry location; (2) Where they are not exposed to splash, dust, or other contamination; and (3) At least 150 mm (6 inches) above the deck.
