New Law Boosts Procurement Transparency

The USAID Business Environment Activity and e-Government Project played a key role in the development of the new Law on Public Procurement in the Republic of Macedonia. Adopted by the Macedonian Assembly on November 6, 2007, the law increases transparency of tendering procedures, provides consistency with other legislation and strengthens the legal protection of bidders.

“The new law enhances the integrity of the Government’s purchasing decisions, which will improve Macedonia’s reputation in the area of corruption and attract trade and investment partners,” said U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Thomas Navratil at the ceremony, which attracted over 300 participants. “However, only fair, transparent, and efficient implementation will bring the desired benefits.”

The USAID Business Environment Activity has been working with Macedonia’s Ministry of Finance and the Public Procurement Bureau since 2006 to develop and facilitate adoption of this law. It will continue to work with these key Government counterparts to ensure the efficient implementation of the law – an important step forward to the harmonization of Macedonia’s legislations with European Union standards.
