I have heard that if I am exempt from the GPO, I will be exempt from the WEP as well. Is this correct?
  Question

I have heard that if I am exempt from the GPO, I will be exempt from the windfall elimination provision (WEP) as well.  Is this correct?

  Answer

No.  The provisions in the law relating to the "last day exemption" and the "last 60-months exemption" to the GPO apply only to the GPO, not to the windfall elimination provision, or WEP.  However, some people who receive government pensions are not subject to the WEP.
