REMARKS BY: TOMMY G. THOMPSON, SECRETARY OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES
PLACE: BIO Convention
DATE: June 23, 2003

Introduction of the President, Secretary of HHS Tommy Thompson

The reason I find working with President Bush so gratifying is that his ideas about health care are so simple and so reasonable.

He believes people should lead healthy lifestyles-by eating right, exercising, and avoiding risky behavior.

He believes that doctors should be able to focus on the quality of their care, not the quantity of their paperwork.

He believes that trial lawyers should not drive good doctors out of medicine.

He believes in research, and just finished doubling the annual budget for the National Institutes of Health.

He has actively supported our efforts to improve and streamline the drug approval process, so we can get exciting new medicines to patients quickly. While it used to take years to approve a drug, under our accelerated process we can approve a drug in months and sometimes even weeks.

And to expand access to these and other drugs, he is working with Congress to make sure Medicare offers more choices and better benefits

I'm proud to work with him and I'm proud to introduce him.

Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States.
