UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 12, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 301,000, a decrease of 21,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 322,000. The 4-week moving average was 328,500, a decrease of 11,750 from the previous week's revised average of 340,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent for the week ending Jan. 5, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 5 was 2,751,000, an increase of 66,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,685,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,725,750, an increase of 28,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,697,500.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 547,637 in the week ending Jan. 12, an increase of 26,357 from the previous week. There were 506,709 initial claims in the comparable week in 2007.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent during the week ending Jan. 5, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,513,647, an increase of 243,790 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 3,122,227.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Dec. 29.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,591 in the week ending Jan. 5, an increase of 145 from the prior week. There were 1,340 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 392 from the preceding week.

There were 17,720 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 29, a decrease of 562 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,375, an increase of 479 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 29 were in Alaska (4.7 percent), Michigan (4.5), Wisconsin (4.3), Oregon (3.9), Rhode Island (3.8), Idaho (3.7), Pennsylvania (3.7), Arkansas (3.6), Vermont (3.6), and Massachusetts (3.4).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 5 were in New York (+30,314), North Carolina (+21,330), Georgia (+14,105), South Carolina (+8,347), and Alabama (+6,700), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-22,130), Wisconsin (-13,173), Iowa (-7,745), Ohio (-7,589), and Pennsylvania (-6,973).
