UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Nov. 3, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 317,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 330,000. The 4-week moving average was 329,750, an increase of 2,000 from the previous week's revised average of 327,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Oct. 27, unchanged from the prior week's revised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 27 was 2,579,000, a decrease of 4,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,583,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,552,250, an increase of 16,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,536,250.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 324,232 in the week ending Nov. 3, an increase of 20,589 from the previous week. There were 326,711 initial claims in the comparable week in 2006.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending Oct. 27, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,264,639, an increase of 22,630 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 2,150,055.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Oct. 20.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,169 in the week ending Oct. 27, a decrease of 325 from the prior week. There were 1,787 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 35 from the preceding week.

There were 14,459 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 20, a decrease of 1,374 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,873, a decrease of 81 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 20 were in Puerto Rico (3.3 percent), Alaska (3.0), Michigan (2.7), Arkansas (2.4), New Jersey (2.4), Pennsylvania (2.4), California (2.3), Oregon (2.3), Rhode Island (2.2), Massachusetts (2.0), Nevada (2.0), South Carolina (2.0), and Wisconsin (2.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 27 were in Pennsylvania (+3,525), Ohio (+2,672), Kentucky (+1,321), California (+989), and Texas (+650), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-4,581), Illinois (-1,702), South Carolina (-1,547), New York (-1,546), and Indiana (-1,411).
