UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 301,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 309,000. The 4-week moving average was 312,000, a decrease of 6,250 from the previous week's revised average of 318,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending July 7, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 7 was 2,571,000, an increase of 20,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,551,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,542,250, an increase of 13,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,528,750.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 381,697 in the week ending July 14, a decrease of 35,760 from the previous week. There were 377,115 initial claims in the comparable week in 2006.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during the week ending July 7, an increase of 0.3 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,588,833, an increase of 285,426 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,517,917.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending June 30.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,913 in the week ending July 7, an increase of 437 from the prior week. There were 1,467 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 122 from the preceding week.

There were 11,702 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 30, a decrease of 713 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 20,322, a decrease of 937 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 30 were in Puerto Rico (3.1 percent), New Jersey (2.7), Pennsylvania (2.7), Rhode Island (2.7), Alaska (2.6), Michigan (2.6), Arkansas (2.5), Connecticut (2.4), Massachusetts (2.4), and Oregon (2.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 7 were in Michigan (+31,282), Ohio (+12,830), New York (+12,223), Wisconsin (+11,835), and Pennsylvania (+6,721), while the largest decreases were in New Jersey (-5,133), Kentucky (-548), Connecticut (-352), North Carolina (-234), and Massachusetts (-214).
