UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 324,000, an increase of 10,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 314,000. The 4-week moving average was 314,500, an increase of 2,500 from the previous week's revised average of 312,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending June 9, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 9 was 2,523,000, an increase of 39,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,484,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,500,000, a decrease of 250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,500,250.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 288,962 in the week ending June 16, a decrease of 13,308 from the previous week. There were 277,441 initial claims in the comparable week in 2006.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending June 9, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,303,069, an increase of 35,330 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,226,057.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending June 2.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,210 in the week ending June 9, a decrease of 94 from the prior week. There were 1,738 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 334 from the preceding week.

There were 10,500 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 2, a decrease of 709 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 21,166, an increase of 94 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 2 were in Alaska (3.1 percent), Puerto Rico (3.0), Michigan (2.8), Arkansas (2.5), New Jersey (2.5), Pennsylvania (2.4), Oregon (2.3), Rhode Island (2.3), California (2.2), Massachusetts (2.2), and Wisconsin (2.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 9 were in California (+10,333), Pennsylvania (+5,220), Florida (+3,576), Illinois (+3,162), and South Carolina (+2,420), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-1,093), Kansas (-598), Iowa (-372), Alabama (-308), and Mississippi (-275).
