UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending June 2, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 2 was 2,487,000, a decrease of 43,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,530,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,501,000, an increase of 4,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,497,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 299,331 in the week ending June 9, an increase of 35,885 from the previous week. There were 285,892 initial claims in the comparable week in 2006. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the
week ending June 2, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number
for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,270,327, an increase
of 15,983 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent
and the volume was 2,227,031. Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending May 26. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,286 in the week ending June 2, an increase of 294 from the prior week. There were 1,402 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 152 from the preceding week. There were 11,208 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 26, an increase of 1,021 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 21,070, a decrease of 79 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 26 were in Alaska (3.3 percent), Michigan (2.8), Puerto Rico (2.7), Pennsylvania (2.6), New Jersey (2.5), Arkansas (2.4), Oregon (2.4), California (2.2), Massachusetts (2.2), and Rhode Island (2.2). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 2 were in Georgia (+1,101), Minnesota (+946), Illinois (+932), Kentucky (+803), and Iowa (+755), while the largest decreases were in California (-6,948), Texas (-1,916), New Jersey (-1,668), New York (-1,548), and Florida (-1,101).
