UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Aug. 19, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 313,000, a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 314,000. The 4-week moving average was 315,250, an increase of 3,500 from the previous week's revised average of 311,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Aug. 12, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug. 12 was 2,492,000, a decrease of 9,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,501,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,474,500, an increase of 6,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,467,750.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 248,918 in the week ending Aug. 19, a decrease of 7,381 from the previous week. There were 252,016 initial claims in the comparable week in 2005.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during the week ending Aug. 12, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,335,419, a decrease of 13,124 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,418,884.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Aug. 5.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,230 in the week ending Aug. 12, an increase of 89 from the prior week. There were 2,246 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 11 from the preceding week.

There were 15,128 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 5, a decrease of 201 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 25,856, a decrease of 151 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 5 were in Puerto Rico (5.0 percent), Michigan (3.1), New Jersey (3.0), Alaska (2.8), Pennsylvania (2.8), Rhode Island (2.7), Connecticut (2.5), Massachusetts (2.4), Arkansas (2.3), Oregon (2.2), South Carolina (2.2), and Wisconsin (2.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 12 were in Arkansas (+850), Oklahoma (+441), Nevada (+422), New York (+421), and North Carolina (+300), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-2,772), Kentucky (-2,103), California (-1,988), Indiana (-1,930), and Pennsylvania
(-1,880).
