UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 298,000, a decrease of 7,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 305,000. The 4-week moving average was 312,750, a decrease of 4,250 from the previous week's revised average of 317,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending July 15, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 15 was 2,475,000, a decrease of 23,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,498,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,460,250, an increase of 18,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,442,000.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 287,747 in the week ending July 22, a decrease of 89,903 from the previous week. There were 295,026 initial claims in the comparable week in 2005.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the week ending July 15, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,509,781, a decrease of 8,103 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,634,714.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending July 8.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,807 in the week ending July 15, a decrease of 507 from the prior week. There were 2,536 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 544 from the preceding week.

There were 13,843 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 8, an increase of 1,481 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 25,952, an increase of 1,970 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 8 were in Puerto Rico (4.9 percent), Michigan (3.2), Pennsylvania (3.2), New Jersey (3.1), Alaska (3.0), Arkansas (2.7), Rhode Island (2.7), Wisconsin (2.7), Connecticut (2.6), Massachusetts (2.5), and Oregon (2.5).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 15 were in North Carolina (+7,402), Tennessee (+7,316), South Carolina (+5,814), Alabama (+5,598), and Georgia (+5,523), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-14,432), Wisconsin (-7,466), New York (-6,458), Pennsylvania
(-6,327), and Ohio (-5,996).
