UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 273,000, a decrease of 11,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 284,000. The 4-week moving average was 284,250, a decrease of 4,750 from the previous week's revised average of 289,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Jan. 21, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 21 was 2,509,000, a decrease of 64,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,573,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,575,500, a decrease of 45,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,621,000.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 318,337 in the week ending Jan. 28, a decrease of 19 from the previous week. There were 364,704 initial claims in the comparable week in 2005.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the week ending Jan. 21, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,066,329, an increase of 21,988 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.6 percent and the volume was 3,263,705.

Extended benefits were available in Louisiana during the week ending Jan. 14.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,239 in the week ending Jan. 21, a decrease of 732 from the prior week. There were 2,369 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 476 from the preceding week.

There were 20,373 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 14, a decrease of 2,489 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 29,254, a decrease of 465 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 14 were in Alaska (6.0 percent), Michigan (4.2), Pennsylvania (4.1), Mississippi (3.5), Wisconsin (3.5), New Jersey (3.3), Oregon (3.3), Idaho (3.2), Louisiana (3.2), Massachusetts (3.2), and Rhode Island (3.2).

There were no increases in initial claims in the week ending Jan. 21. The largest decreases were in Tennessee (-11,338), North Carolina (-9,017), Michigan (-9,007), New York (-7,596), and Pennsylvania (-7,249).
