UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Nov. 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 326,000, an increase of 2,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 324,000. The 4-week moving average was 334,250, a decrease of 16,250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 350,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent for the week ending Oct. 29, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 29 was 2,818,000, an increase of 23,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,795,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,835,500, a decrease of 10,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,845,500.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 338,578 in the week ending Nov. 5, an increase of 44,403 from the previous week. There were 351,404 initial claims in the comparable week in 2004.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the week ending Oct. 29, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,440,658, an increase of 61,950 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,434,394.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Oct. 22.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,371 in the week ending Oct. 29, a decrease of 566 from the prior week. There were 1,807 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 257 from the preceding week.

There were 16,924 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 22, a decrease of 398 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 28,115, a decrease of 764 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 22 were in Louisiana (10.7 percent), Mississippi (4.9), Puerto Rico (4.6), Alaska (3.5), Michigan (2.4), New Jersey (2.4), Oregon (2.4), Pennsylvania (2.4), Arkansas (2.3), California (2.0), Connecticut (2.0), Massachusetts (2.0), and South Carolina (2.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 29 were in Ohio (+3,190), Pennsylvania (+3,140), Kentucky (+1,280), Missouri (+1,272), and Wisconsin (+742), while the largest decreases were in New York (-3,785), North Carolina (-3,292), Texas (-2,187), California (-1,810), and South Carolina (-1,769).
