UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Oct. 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 328,000, a decrease of 28,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 356,000. The 4-week moving average was 366,500, a decrease of 10,000 from the previous week's revised average of 376,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending Oct. 15, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 2.2 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 15 was 2,904,000, an increase of 42,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,862,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,873,500, an increase of 29,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,844,250.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 303,125 in the week ending Oct. 22, an increase of 162 from the previous week. There were 317,573 initial claims in the comparable week in 2004.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the week ending Oct. 15, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,468,090, an increase of 124,293 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,402,533.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Oct. 8.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,516 in the week ending Oct. 15, a decrease of 813 from the prior week. There were 1,940 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 608 from the preceding week.

There were 15,791 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 8, an increase of 576 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 27,281, a decrease of 922 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 8 were in Louisiana (11.2 percent), Mississippi (5.5), Puerto Rico (3.8), Alaska (3.1), Michigan (2.3), New Jersey (2.3), Oregon (2.3), Pennsylvania (2.3), Arkansas (2.2), Connecticut (2.0), Massachusetts (2.0), and South Carolina (2.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 15 were in North Carolina (+1,920), Kentucky (+1,155), New York (+645), Vermont (+306), and Rhode Island (+294), while the largest decreases were in Louisiana (-24,286), Texas (-9,244), California (-8,253), Mississippi (-7,336), and Illinois (-4,543).
