UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 23, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 310,000, an increase of 5,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 305,000. The 4-week moving average was 318,250, a decrease of 250 from the previous week's revised average of 318,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending July 16, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 16 was 2,603,000, an increase of 32,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,571,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,590,750, an increase of 1,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,589,250.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 294,718 in the week ending July 23, a decrease of 76,535 from the previous week. There were 313,225 initial claims in the comparable week in 2004.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending July 16, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,634,436, an increase of 9,894 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,938,264.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending July 9.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,760 in the week ending July 16, a decrease of 330 from the prior week. There were 2,145 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 107 from the preceding week.

There were 15,542 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 9, an increase of 1,576 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 28,613, an increase of 1,298 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 9 were in Puerto Rico (4.5 percent), Alaska (3.4), Michigan (3.2), New Jersey (3.1), Pennsylvania (3.1), Oregon (2.9), Rhode Island (2.9), Wisconsin (2.7), Arkansas (2.6), Connecticut (2.6), Massachusetts (2.6), and South Carolina (2.6).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 16 were in Tennessee (+5,668), Georgia (+5,330), North Carolina (+4,836), Alabama (+4,154), and California (+2,706), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-20,903), New York (-8,069), Indiana (-7,927), Texas (-6,367), and Pennsylvania (-4,651).
