UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 319,000, a decrease of 48,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 367,000. The 4-week moving average was 341,000, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of 344,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent for the week ending Jan. 8, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.1 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 8 was 2,694,000, an increase of 47,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,647,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,744,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,752,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 468,337 in the week ending Jan. 15, a decrease of 226,937 from the previous week. There were 490,763 initial claims in the comparable week in 2004.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent during the week ending Jan. 8, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,337,710, a decrease of 63,382 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.1 percent and the volume was 3,851,301.

 

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Jan. 1.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,712 in the week ending Jan. 8, an increase of 967 from the prior week. There were 2,292 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 793 from the preceding week.

There were 21,407 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 1, a decrease of 1,521 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 27,774, a decrease of 96 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 1 were in Alaska (6.0 percent), Pennsylvania (4.3), Wisconsin (4.3), Michigan (4.2), Idaho (4.0), Oregon (3.9), Rhode Island (3.8), New Jersey (3.7), Connecticut (3.6), Arkansas (3.5), and Massachusetts (3.5).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 8 were in New York (+15,397), Texas (+12,756), California (+12,043), North Carolina (+11,270), and Tennessee (+11,172), while the largest decreases were in Kentucky(-5,329), Massachusetts (-4,087), Wisconsin (-3,860), Iowa (-1,949), and Michigan (-935).
