UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 12, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 336,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 351,000. The 4-week moving average was 343,250, a decrease of 2,750 from the previous week's unrevised average of 346,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending June 5, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 5 was 2,895,000, an increase of 31,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,864,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,920,750, a decrease of 9,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,930,250.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 311,906 in the week ending June 12, an increase of 3,927 from the previous week. There were 383,371 initial claims in the comparable week in 2003.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending June 5, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,677,997, an increase of 43,039 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.7 percent and the volume was 3,376,503.

 

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending May 29.

10,895 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending May 29.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,343 in the week ending June 5, a decrease of 70 from the prior week. There were 1,865 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 15 from the preceding week.

There were 14,267 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 29, an increase of 1,033 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 24,916, a decrease of 77 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 29 were in Alaska (4.9 percent), Puerto Rico (3.8), Oregon (3.2), Pennsylvania (3.0), New Jersey (2.9), Michigan (2.7), Washington (2.7), Arkansas (2.6), California (2.6), and Massachusetts (2.6).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 5 were in California (+2,628), Tennessee (+1,613), Pennsylvania (+1,466), Michigan (+1,442), and Louisiana (+1,055), while the largest decreases were in Texas (-1,303), Florida (-1,154), New Jersey (-889), South Carolina (-821), and Arizona (-799).
