UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Dec. 20, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 353,000, a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 354,000. The 4-week moving average was 361,750, a decrease of 250 from the previous week's revised average of 362,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent for the week ending Dec. 13, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.6 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 13 was 3,269,000, a decrease of 38,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,307,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,307,750, a decrease of 17,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,325,250.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 423,782 in the week ending Dec. 20, an increase of 11,248 from the previous week. There were 483,449 initial claims in the comparable week in 2002.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent during the week ending Dec. 13, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,423,053, an increase of 136,041 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.8 percent and the volume was 3,630,381.

 

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending Dec. 6.

53 states reported that 807,205 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Dec. 6.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,749 in the week ending Dec. 13, a decrease of 770 from the prior week. There were 1,758 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 617 from the preceding week.

There were 21,035 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 6, a decrease of 2,372 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 24,298, a decrease of 886 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 6 were in Alaska (5.6 percent), Puerto Rico (4.8), Washington (4.1), Oregon (4.0), Pennsylvania (3.8), Idaho (3.6), California (3.4), Michigan (3.4), West Virginia (3.4), New Jersey (3.2), and Wisconsin (3.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 13 were in Massachusetts (+2,179), Ohio (+2,142), Texas (+1,861), Kansas (+974), and Rhode Island (+587), while the largest decreases were in Pennsylvania (-14,077), North Carolina (-10,960), California (-9,644), New York (-9,583), and Georgia (-5,130).
