UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Nov. 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 366,000, an increase of 13,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 353,000. The 4-week moving average was 375,250, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous week's revised average of 381,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent for the week ending Nov. 1, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 1 was 3,527,000, an increase of 49,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,478,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,511,500, a decrease of 24,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,536,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 393,405 in the week ending Nov. 8, an increase of 48,412 from the previous week. There were 427,078 initial claims in the comparable week in 2002.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the week ending Nov. 1, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,064,871, an increase of 115,484 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.5 percent and the volume was 3,137,165.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending Oct. 25.

53 states reported that 816,099 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Oct. 25.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,535 in the week ending Nov. 1, a decrease of 224 from the prior week. There were 1,643 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 89 from the preceding week.

There were 18,848 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 25, a decrease of 1,839 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,678, a decrease of 321 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 25 were in Puerto Rico (4.5 percent), Alaska (4.3), Oregon (3.6), Washington (3.4), Pennsylvania (3.2), California (3.1), New Jersey (3.0), Michigan (2.8), Arkansas (2.7), Connecticut (2.7), Massachusetts (2.7), and South Carolina (2.7).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 1 were in Wisconsin (+2,440), Michigan (+2,159), Pennsylvania (+1,864), Iowa (+1,648), and Minnesota (+924), while the largest decreases were in California (-12,812), North Carolina (-1,785), Kentucky (-1,172), West Virginia (-808), and Oklahoma (-793).
