UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Sept. 20, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 381,000, a decrease of 19,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 400,000. The 4-week moving average was 407,000, a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week's revised average of 411,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending Sept. 13, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 13 was 3,631,000, a decrease of 28,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,659,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,636,750, a decrease of 750 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,637,500.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 296,925 in the week ending Sept. 20, a decrease of 30,290 from the previous week. There were 317,264 initial claims in the comparable week in 2002.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the week ending Sept. 13, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,060,829, a decrease of 122,365 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 3,013,696.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Michigan, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending Sept. 6.

53 states reported that 839,247 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Sept. 6.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,412 in the week ending Sept. 13, an increase of 1,129 from the prior week. There were 1,842 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 133 from the preceding week.

There were 18,270 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 6, an increase of 1,803 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 19,468, an increase of 1,380 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 6 were in Puerto Rico (5.9 percent), Oregon (3.8), Alaska (3.6), New Jersey (3.5), Pennsylvania (3.5), California (3.4), Washington (3.3), Massachusetts (3.0), Arkansas (2.9), and Connecticut (2.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 13 were in California (+5,215), New York (+2,039), Florida (+1,366), North Carolina (+1,343), and Virginia (+1,276), while the largest decreases were in Georgia (-3,175), Pennsylvania (-2,854), Texas (-2,334), Oregon (-817), and Ohio (-762).
