UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending May 31, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 442,000, an increase of 16,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 426,000. The 4-week moving average was 430,500, an increase of 3,000 from the previous week's revised average of 427,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending May 24, unchanged from the prior week's revised rate of 2.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 24 was 3,705,000, a decrease of 18,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,723,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,709,750, an increase of 15,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,694,250.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 347,237 in the week ending May 31, a decrease of 12,598 from the previous week. There were 309,183 initial claims in the comparable week in 2002.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent during the week ending May 24, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,319,758, a decrease of 83,395 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.6 percent and the volume was 3,325,982.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending May 17.

53 states reported that 841,369 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending May 17.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,143 in the week ending May 24, an increase of 66 from the prior week. There were 1,061 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 51 from the preceding week.

There were 13,786 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 17, an increase of 859 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,311, an increase of 586 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 17 were in Alaska (5.2 percent), Puerto Rico (5.1), Oregon (4.7), Washington (4.0), California (3.8), Pennsylvania (3.7), Idaho (3.4), Michigan (3.2), New Jersey (3.2), and Massachusetts (3.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 24 were in Illinois (+2,536), New York (+2,277), Indiana (+1,350), Kansas (+1,318), and Washington (+787), while the largest decreases were in Georgia (-2,458),
Oklahoma (-2,453), Tennessee (-1,701), North Carolina (-1,633), and Alabama (-1,430).
