UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Dec. 27, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 339,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 354,000. The 4-week moving average was 355,750, a decrease of 6,500 from the previous week's revised average of 362,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent for the week ending Dec. 20, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.6 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 20 was 3,315,000, an increase of 81,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,234,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,293,000, a decrease of 6,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,299,250.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 516,501 in the week ending Dec. 27, an increase of 91,785 from the previous week. There were 620,929 initial claims in the comparable week in 2002.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent during the week ending Dec. 20, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,268,127, a decrease of 117,479 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.7 percent and the volume was 3,428,329.

 

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending Dec. 13.

53 states reported that 817,072 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Dec. 13.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,109 in the week ending Dec. 20, an increase of 358 from the prior week. There were 1,591 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 171 from the preceding week.

There were 24,185 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 13, an increase of 3,191 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 25,861, an increase of 1,554 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 13 were in Alaska (6.4 percent), Puerto Rico (5.3), Oregon (4.0), Washington (4.0), Pennsylvania (3.8), Michigan (3.7), Idaho (3.6), California (3.5), Montana (3.4), and Wisconsin (3.4).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 20 were in Kentucky (+7,811), Indiana (+7,264), Texas (+2,742), Missouri (+2,651), and Michigan (+2,382), while the largest decreases were in California (-3,158), Georgia (-2,945), Massachusetts (-2,173), South Carolina (-1,709), and New Jersey (-1,697).
