UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Nov. 30, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 355,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 368,000. The 4-week moving average was 376,500, a decrease of  10,500 from the previous week's revised average of 387,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent for the week ending Nov. 23, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 2.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 23  was 3,486,000, a decrease of 123,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,609,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,575,500, a decrease of 17,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,593,250.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 382,818 in the week ending Nov. 30, a decrease of 53,636 from the previous week. There were 605,902 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5 percent during the week ending Nov. 23, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,130,850, a decrease of 132,069 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.9 percent and the volume was 3,722,010.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending Nov. 16 .

53 states reported that 783,768 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Nov. 16.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,112 in the week ending Nov. 23, an increase of 532 from the prior week. There were 1,433 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 209 from the preceding week.

There were 20,827 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 16, an increase of 2,619 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 19,451, an increase of 669 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 16 were in Alaska (5.4 percent), Puerto Rico (5.0), Oregon (4.1), Washington (4.1), the Virgin Islands (3.7), California (3.6), Pennsylvania (3.5), Arkansas (3.2), New Jersey (3.2), and Massachusetts (3.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 23 were in California (+17,526), Michigan (+10,226), Kentucky (+4,444), Illinois (+3,793), and Wisconsin (+2,166), while the largest decreases were in Alabama (-1,075), North Dakota (-380), Hawaii (-78), Idaho (-49), and New Hampshire (-2).
