UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Oct. 26, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 410,000, an increase of 16,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 394,000. The 4-week moving average was 401,750, a decrease of  3,500 from the previous week's revised average of 405,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent for the week ending Oct. 19, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 19 was 3,620,000, an increase of 76,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,544,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,616,750, a decrease of 7,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,624,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 376,366 in the week ending Oct. 26, an increase of 26,568 from the previous week. There were 436,902 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the week ending Oct. 19, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,055,601, an increase of 85,870 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 3,030,300.  

Extended benefits were available in North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending Oct. 12.

53 states reported that 812,401 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Oct. 12.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,159 in the week ending Oct. 19, a decrease of 735 from the prior week. There were 1,373 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 348 from the preceding week.

There were 18,786 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 12, a decrease of 481 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,977, an increase of 566 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 12 were in Puerto Rico (4.9 percent), Alaska (3.9), Oregon (3.6), Washington (3.4), California (3.2), the Virgin Islands (3.2), Pennsylvania (3.1), New Jersey (3.0), Arkansas (2.8), and Massachusetts (2.8).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 19 were in Tennessee (+2,057), Iowa (+1,207), Pennsylvania (+410), Mississippi (+193), and Minnesota (+93), while the largest decreases were in Missouri (-4,270), Illinois (-3,103), New York (-2,879), North Carolina (-2,476), and Michigan (-2,381).
