UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Sept. 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 417,000, an increase of 5,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 412,000. The 4-week moving average was 423,000, an increase of  2,500 from the previous week's revised average of 420,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending Sept. 21, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 21 was 3,681,000, an increase of 29,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,652,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,615,750, an increase of 39,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,576,750.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 314,256 in the week ending Sept. 28, a decrease of  3,663 from the previous week. There were 400,400 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the week ending Sept. 21, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,014,686, a decrease of  2,098 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,737,709. 

Extended benefits were available in Oregon and Washington during the week ending Sept. 14.

53 states reported that 970,214 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Sept. 14.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,431 in the week ending Sept. 21, a decrease of 181 from the prior week. There were 1,451 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 97 from the preceding week.

There were 17,775 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 14, a decrease of 118 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,457, an increase of 325 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 14 were in Puerto Rico (5.9 percent), Alaska (3.5), Oregon (3.5), Washington (3.4), California (3.2), Pennsylvania (3.2), the Virgin Islands (3.2), New Jersey (3.1), Massachusetts (2.9), and Connecticut (2.8).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 21 were in California (+1,819), Texas (+1,633), Delaware (+1,111), New Jersey (+1,018), and Maryland (+499), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-7,585), Georgia (-3,172), Michigan (-2,863), South Carolina (-2,670), and Ohio (-2,212).
