UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Sept. 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 406,000, a decrease of 24,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 430,000. The 4-week moving average was 419,000, a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of 420,000. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending Sept. 14, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.8 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment
during the week ending Sept. 14 was 3,678,000, an increase
of 89,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,589,000. The 4-week
moving average was 3,584,250, an increase of 28,500 from the preceding
week's revised average of 3,555,750. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 313,469 in the week ending Sept. 21, a decrease of 23,902 from the previous week. There were 353,611 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the week ending Sept. 14, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,037,640, a decrease of 73,698 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,703,020. Extended benefits were available in Oregon and Washington during the week ending Sept. 7. 53 states reported that 1,056,826 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Sept. 7. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,611 in the week ending Sept. 14, an increase of 356 from the prior week. There were 1,539 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 220 from the preceding week. There were 17,968 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 7, an increase of 1,277 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,227, an increase of 863 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 7 were in Puerto Rico (5.4 percent), Oregon (3.6), Washington (3.5), Alaska (3.4), New Jersey (3.4), California (3.3), Pennsylvania (3.3), Massachusetts (3.1), the Virgin Islands (3.0), Arkansas (2.8), and Connecticut (2.8). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 14 were in Ohio (+5,631), California (+5,133), Georgia (+3,854), North Carolina (+2,374), and Michigan (+2,362), while the largest decreases were in Texas (-4,319), Pennsylvania (-2,666), Maryland (-784), Wisconsin (-672), and New Hampshire (-398).
