UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Aug. 10, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 388,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 382,000. The 4-week moving average was 381,750, an increase of  1,250 from the previous week's revised average of 380,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent for the week ending Aug. 3, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 2.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug. 3 was 3,576,000, an increase of 73,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,503,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,511,750, a decrease of 1,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,513,250.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 329,724 in the week ending Aug. 10, an increase of  3,574 from the previous week. There were 333,042 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent during the week ending Aug. 3, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,361,018, a decrease of  5,426 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,897,604.

Extended benefits were available in Oregon and Washington during the week ending July 27.

51 states reported that 1,031,574 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending July 27.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,399 in the week ending Aug. 3, a decrease of 6 from the prior week. There were 1,293 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 16 from the preceding week.

There were 18,191 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 27, an increase of 1,305 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,713, an increase of 359 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 27 were in Puerto Rico (5.8 percent), Oregon (3.8), Alaska (3.7), Washington (3.7), Pennsylvania (3.6), California (3.5), New Jersey (3.5), Connectucut (3.2), Massachusetts (3.2), and Rhode Island (3.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 3 were in Texas (+2,645), Pennsylvania (+2,422), Wisconsin (+824), Puerto Rico (+800), and Massachusetts (+781), while the largest decreases were in California (-7,266), Michigan (-4,938), Tennessee (-2,775), Alabama (-1,500), and Florida (-1,476).
