UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Aug. 3, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 376,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 391,000. The 4-week moving average was 379,000, a decrease of 7,750 from the previous week's revised average of 386,750. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent for the week ending July 27, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.7 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment
during the week ending July 27 was 3,532,000, an increase
of 51,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,481,000. The 4-week
moving average was 3,521,750, a decrease of 14,500 from the preceding
week's revised average of 3,536,250. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 321,185 in the week ending Aug. 3, a decrease of 17,049 from the previous week. There were 341,660 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent during the week ending July 27, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,394,129, a decrease of 13,925 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,937,020. Extended benefits were available in Oregon and Washington during the week ending July 20. 51 states reported that 1,074,560 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending July 20. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,402 in the week ending July 27, a decrease of 192 from the prior week. There were 1,310 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 6 from the preceding week. There were 16,977 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 20, a decrease of 228 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,487, an increase of 454 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 20 were in Puerto Rico (5.0 percent), Alaska (3.8), Oregon (3.8), Washington (3.8), Pennsylvania (3.7), New Jersey (3.6), California (3.5), Massachusetts (3.4), Rhode Island (3.4), and Connecticut (3.3). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 27 were in California (+1,221), Indiana (+755), Washington (+492), Iowa (+244), and Idaho (+127), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-8,059), Michigan (-7,627), Ohio (-6,454), Tennessee (-4,841), and Alabama (-4,512).
