UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 388,000, a decrease of 10,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 398,000. The 4-week moving average was 391,000, a decrease of  6,500 from the previous week's revised average of 397,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending June 15, unchanged  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 15 was 3,706,000, a decrease of 43,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,749,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,748,250, a decrease of 22,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,770,250.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 354,891 in the week ending June  22, a decrease of  971 from the previous week. There were 351,770 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent during the week ending June 15, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,350,576, a decrease of  31,423 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,703,845.

Extended benefits were available in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending June 8.

50 states reported that 1,342,775 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending June 8.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,381 in the week ending June 15, a decrease of 167 from the prior week. There were 1,038 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 104 from the preceding week.

There were 13,885 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 8, a decrease of 277 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,847, an increase of 332 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 8 were in Puerto Rico (5.4 percent), Alaska (4.3), Washington (4.1), Oregon (3.9), South Carolina (3.8), California (3.7), Pennsylvania (3.5), Arkansas (3.1), Massachusetts (3.1), New Jersey (3.1), and Wisconsin (3.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 15 were in Michigan (+3,217), California (+1,335), Pennsylvania (+652), Maryland (+611), and Tennessee (+536), while the largest decreases were in Georgia (-3,746), New York (-3,690), North Carolina (-3,526), Texas (-2,111), and Illinois (-2,079).
