UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 393,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 395,000. The 4-week moving average was 396,250, a decrease of  7,250 from the previous week's revised average of 403,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending June 8, unchanged  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 8 was 3,775,000, an increase of 23,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,752,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,778,000, a decrease of 14,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,792,250.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 351,356 in the week ending June  15, a decrease of  27,097 from the previous week. There were 354,526 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent during the week ending June 8, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,404,762, an increase of  28,349 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,685,697.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending June 1.

49 states reported that 1,454,156 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending June 1.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,537 in the week ending June 8, a decrease of 135 from the prior week. There were 1,137 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 290 from the preceding week.

There were 14,240 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 1, an increase of 1,594 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,690, an increase of 115 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 1 were in Puerto Rico (6.0 percent), Alaska (4.9), Washington (4.2), Oregon (4.0), South Carolina (3.9), California (3.5), Pennsylvania (3.4), New Jersey (3.3), Arkansas (3.2), and Massachusetts (3.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 8 were in California (+8,368), Illinois (+6,017), Pennsylvania (+5,730), Georgia (+4,387), and North Carolina (+3,886), while the largest decreases were in Mississippi (-462), New Mexico (-243), Maine (-222), Idaho (-60), and the Virgin Islands (-34).
