UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending June 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 390,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 384,000. The 4-week moving average was 402,500, a decrease of 8,750 from the previous week's unrevised average of 411,250. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending June 1, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 3.0 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment
during the week ending June 1 was 3,773,000, a decrease of 18,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 3,791,000. The 4-week moving average
was 3,797,500, a decrease of 15,000 from the preceding week's revised
average of 3,812,500. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 373,532 in the week ending June 8, an increase of 63,488 from the previous week. There were 397,015 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent during the week ending June 1, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,395,875, an increase of 51,885 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,680,033. Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending May 25. 49 states reported that 1,241,434 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending May 25. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,651 in the week ending June 1, an increase of 478 from the prior week. There were 843 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 134 from the preceding week. There were 12,757 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 25, a decrease of 453 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,745, an increase of 119 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 25 were in Puerto Rico (4.7 percent), Alaska (4.5), Washington (4.2), Oregon (4.0), South Carolina (3.8), California (3.6), Pennsylvania (3.5), Massachusetts (3.2), New Jersey (3.1), Arkansas (3.0), and Illinois (3.0). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 1 were in New Mexico (+636), Alabama (+406), Washington (+387), Arizona (+94), and South Dakota (+92), while the largest decreases were in California (-9,508), New York (-3,108), New Jersey (-2,691), Maryland (-1,864), and Illinois (-1,791).
