UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 383,000, a decrease of 32,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 415,000. The 4-week moving average was 411,250, a decrease of  8,500 from the previous week's revised average of 419,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.0 percent for the week ending May 25, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 3.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 25 was 3,824,000, an increase of 29,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,795,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,821,000, an increase of 12,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,808,750.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 309,376 in the week ending June 1, a decrease of  37,769 from the previous week. There were 335,765 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent during the week ending May 25, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,372,702, a decrease of  19,785 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,616,172.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending May 18.

48 states reported that 1,435,039 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending May 18.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,172 in the week ending May 25, an increase of 64 from the prior week. There were 968 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 30 from the preceding week.

There were 13,295 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 18, a decrease of 144 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,809, a decrease of 415 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 18 werein Puerto Rico (5.2 percent), Alaska (5.1), Washington (4.3), Oregon (4.1), South Carolina (3.8), California (3.5), Pennsylvania (3.5), New Jersey (3.3), Massachusetts (3.2), and Arkansas (3.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 25 were in California (+2,288), New York (+1,708), Maryland (+1,395), Wisconsin (+1,064), and Idaho (+885), while the largest decreases were in Texas (-2,166), Pennsylvania (-1,742), Ohio (-1,598), Alabama (-1,547), and Virginia (-974).
