UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending May 18, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 416,000, a decrease of 9,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 425,000. The 4-week moving average was 420,000, a decrease of  2,750 from the previous week's revised average of 422,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.0 percent for the week ending May 11, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 3.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 11 was 3,870,000, an increase of 29,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,841,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,806,750, an increase of 45,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,761,750.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 344,482 in the week ending  May 18, a decrease of  14,243 from the previous week. There were 338,374 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent during the week ending May 11, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,549,045, an increase of  30,353 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,611,965.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending May 4.

49 states reported that 1,417,291 individuals filed under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending May 4.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,581 in the week ending May 11, an increase of 400 from the prior week. There were 957 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 67 from the preceding week.

There were 13,898 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 4, a decrease of 122 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,112, a decrease of 672 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 4 were in Alaska (5.5 percent), Puerto Rico (5.0), Washington (4.5), Oregon (4.4), Wisconsin (4.0), South Carolina (3.8), California (3.6), Pennsylvania (3.6), Idaho (3.4), and Massachusetts (3.4).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 11 were in Ohio (+2,050), Indiana (+1,519), Virginia (+1,424), Kentucky (+975), and Illinois (+702), while the largest decreases were in Pennsylvania (-2,730), Texas (-2,031), California (-1,751), Michigan (-1,187), and Georgia (-822).
