UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending April 27, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 418,000, a decrease of 10,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 428,000. The 4-week moving average was 435,750, a decrease of  18,500 from the previous week's revised average of 454,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending April 20, unchanged  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending April 20 was 3,775,000, an increase of 84,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,691,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,751,750, an increase of 39,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,712,250.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 364,490 in the week ending  April 27, a decrease of 22,782 from the previous week. There were 353,831 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent during the week ending April 20, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,703,575, a decrease of  105,268 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,709,206.  

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending April 13.

45 states reported that 1,031,273 individuals filed under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending April 13.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,135 in the week ending April 20, a decrease of 229 from the prior week. There were 1,027 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 41 from the preceding week.

There were 14,546 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 13, a decrease of 2,782 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,942, an increase of 195 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 13 were in Alaska (5.8 percent), Puerto Rico (4.7), Washington (4.7), Oregon (4.6), California (4.1), Michigan (3.9), Pennsylvania (3.9), Wisconsin (3.9), Massachusetts (3.8), and South Carolina (3.8).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 20 were in Massachusetts (+5,334), Tennessee (+3,267), Connecticut (+2,000), California (+1,982), and Rhode Island (+1,398), while the largest decreases were in New York (-10,991), Pennsylvania (-3,864), North Carolina (-3,821), New Jersey (-3,609), and Wisconsin (-2,800).
