UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending March 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 376,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 381,000. The 4-week moving average was 372,750, a decrease of  1,250 from the previous week's revised average of 374,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent for the week ending Feb.  23, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Feb. 23  was 3,406,000, a decrease of 61,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,467,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,439,250, a decrease of 250 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,439,500.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 380,957 in the week ending  March 2, an increase of 12,939 from the previous week. There were 378,689 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.3 percent during the week ending Feb. 23, unchanged  from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 4,264,479, a decrease of 6,566 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 2,996,014.

Extended benefits were available in Oregon and Washington during the week ending Feb. 16.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 849 in the week ending Feb. 23, a decrease of 202 from the prior week. There were 897 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 162 from the preceding week.

There were 17,511 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Feb. 16, a decrease of 810 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,480, a decrease of 11 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Feb. 16 were in Alaska (7.0 percent), Puerto Rico (5.6), Idaho (5.2), Oregon (5.2), Washington (5.2), Michigan (4.7), Pennsylvania (4.7), Massachusetts (4.5), Wisconsin (4.5), and California (4.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 23 were in Massachusetts (+6,165), Georgia (+2,707), Illinois (+1,514), Rhode Island (+1,381), and Texas (+1,266), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-4,580), North Carolina (-3,264), California (-2,981), Tennessee (-2,239), and South Carolina (-1,840).
