UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 26, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 390,000, an increase of 30,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 360,000. The 4-week moving average was 386,000, a decrease of  15,250 from the previous week's revised average of 401,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent for the week ending Jan. 19, unchanged  from the prior week's revised rate of 2.6 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 19 was 3,382,000, an increase of 21,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,361,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,445,750, a decrease of 81,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,527,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 431,619 in the week ending Jan.  26, a decrease of 126,964 from the previous week. There were 447,993 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.3 percent during the week ending Jan. 19,  unchanged  from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 4,207,789, a decrease of  90,957 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 3,048,535.

Extended benefits were available in Oregon and Washington during the week ending Jan. 12.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,737 in the week ending Jan. 19, a decrease of 793 from the prior week. There were 1,204 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 377 from the preceding week.

There were 21,291 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 12, an increase of 1,262 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,912, a decrease of 266 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 12 were in Alaska (6.1 percent), Oregon (5.6), Washington (5.3), Idaho (5.0), Pennsylvania (4.7), Puerto Rico (4.5), Massachusetts (4.4), Michigan (4.3), Rhode Island (4.3), and Wisconsin (4.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 19 were in Georgia (+2,518), Rhode Island (+531), Missouri (+508), Puerto Rico (+174), and the Virgin Islands (+49), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-51,182), South Carolina (-28,298), Pennsylvania (-16,884), Tennessee (-16,786), and Michigan (-15,467).
