UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 395,000, a decrease of 56,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 451,000. The 4-week moving average was 410,500, a decrease of 250 from the previous week's revised average of 410,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent for the week ending Dec. 29, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 29 was 3,529,000, a decrease of 166,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,695,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,642,750, a decrease of 28,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,670,750.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 631,455 in the week ending Jan. 5, a decrease of 10,686 from the previous week. There were 559,202 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.3 percent during the week ending Dec. 29, an increase of 0.5 percentage point  from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 4,242,042, an increase of  635,835 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 2,986,959.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Dec. 22.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,020 in the week ending Dec. 29, a decrease of 697 from the prior week. There were 667 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 376 from the preceding week.

There were 17,863 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 22, a decrease of 2,574 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,656, a decrease of 1,306 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 22 were in Alaska (5.8 percent), Oregon (5.0), Washington (4.8), Idaho (4.3), Puerto Rico (4.3), Nevada (4.1), Arkansas (3.9), Massachusetts (3.7), Pennsylvania (3.7), Michigan (3.6), and Wisconsin (3.6).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 29 were in Wisconsin (+30,288), Michigan (+24,121), Pennsylvania (+19,920), Massachusetts (+15,024), and Kentucky (+13,579), while the largest decreases were in California (-11,545), Texas (-9,298), Virginia (-7,229), Florida (-4,548), and Georgia (-2,339).
