UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Dec. 29, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 447,000, an increase of 36,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 411,000. The 4-week moving average was 409,750, a decrease of 8,250 from the previous week's revised average of 418,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending Dec. 22, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 22 was 3,715,000, an increase of 42,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,673,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,677,000, an increase of 22,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,654,250.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 637,276 in the week ending Dec. 29, an increase of 107,706 from the previous week. There were 573,284 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent during the week ending Dec. 22, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point  from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,625,602, a decrease of  113,483 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,524,887.  

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Dec. 15.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,716 in the week ending Dec. 22, an increase of 243 from the prior week. There were 1,043 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 107 from the preceding week.

There were 20,470 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 15, an increase of 1,371 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,104, an increase of 122 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 15 were in Puerto Rico (6.9 percent), Alaska (5.5), Oregon (4.9), Washington (4.7), Idaho (4.1), Nevada (4.1), Pennsylvania (3.9), California (3.8), Arkansas (3.7), and Massachusetts (3.6).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 22 were in Virginia (+9,576), Michigan (+7,925), Kentucky (+6,198), Pennsylvania (+5,851), and North Carolina (+5,148), while the largest decreases were in California (-4,332), Florida (-620), West Virginia (-225), Utah (-156), and Maine (-130).
