UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Dec. 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 475,000, a decrease of  18,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 493,000. The 4-week moving average was 460,750, an increase of  5,750 from the previous week's revised average of 455,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent for the week ending Nov. 24, a decrease of 0.3 percentage point  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 3.1 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 24 was 3,638,000, a decrease of 349,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,987,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,785,000, a decrease of 16,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,801,500.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 599,975 in the week ending Dec.1, an increase of  160,533 from the previous week. There were 477,503 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent during the week ending Nov. 24, an increase of 0.5 percentage point  from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,736,198, an increase of  594,723 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,394,176.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Nov. 17.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,403 in the week ending Nov. 24, an increase of 74 from the prior week. There were 853 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 257 from the preceding week.

There were 17,911 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 17, an increase of 1,520 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,101, a decrease of 752 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 17 were in Alaska (4.7 percent), Oregon (4.3), Washington (3.9), California (3.4), Hawaii (3.4), Nevada (3.4), Pennsylvania (3.3), Massachusetts (3.2), Arkansas (3.1), and Idaho (3.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 24 were in Wisconsin (+20,564), Indiana (+5,514), Kentucky (+4,942), Oregon (+4,395), and Arkansas (+3,960), while the largest decreases were in California (-14,872), Michigan (-5,574), Georgia (-4,495), Alabama (-4,054), and South Carolina (-3,340).
