UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Oct. 6, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 468,000, a decrease of  67,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 535,000. The 4-week moving average was 463,000, an increase of  8,000 from the previous week's revised average of 455,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent for the week ending Sept. 29, an increase of  0.1 percentage point  from the prior week's revised rate of 2.6 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 29 was 3,479,000, an increase of 98,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,381,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,340,500, an increase of 37,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,303,250.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 426,525 in the week ending Oct. 6, an increase of  26,130 from the previous week. There were 294,309 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during the week ending Sept. 29, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,776,534, an increase of  34,376 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.4 percent and the volume was 1,710,147.  

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Sept. 22.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,249 in the week ending Sept. 29, a decrease of 13 from the prior week. There were 1,294 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 42 from the preceding week.

There were 16,182 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 22, an increase of 1,712 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,690, an increase of 48 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 22 were in Puerto Rico (5.8 percent), Oregon (3.4), Alaska (3.2), Washington (3.0), California (2.9), Massachusetts (2.8), Pennsylvania (2.8), New Jersey (2.7), Arkansas (2.6), Nevada (2.5), New York (2.5), and Rhode Island (2.5).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 29 were in Florida (+7,631), North Carolina (+4,672), California (+4,418), Ohio (+3,725), and Pennsylvania (+3,110), while the largest decreases were in Puerto Rico (-574), Indiana (-569), Alabama (-509), Kansas (-443), and Maryland (-322).
