News Release ETA News Release: [11/13/2007] U.S. Department of Labor awards more than $680,000 to Iowa to assist workers affected by the closure of WhirlpoolWASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $680,802 grant, with an initial release of $290,412, to provide assistance for approximately 300 workers affected by the closure of Whirlpool Corp. located in Newton, Iowa. "Iowa has begun implementing innovative strategies to assist workers affected by the closure of Whirlpool," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco. "With the help of a previous National Emergency Grant and strategic regional planning, these workers are receiving important re-employment assistance that will help them compete for good jobs in growing industries." Since May 2006, Whirlpool Corp. has been in the process of closing its Newton facility, which will be permanently closed as of December 31. On March 6, the state received from the Labor Department a $250,000 grant to develop new strategies and realign existing ones to establish economic recovery in Newton and surrounding areas. On May 10, Iowa received an additional $263,000 in funds to begin to implement those strategies. The grant announced today was awarded to the Iowa Workforce Development office and will ensure that affected workers continue to receive assistance. Whirlpool workers were previously certified for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), thereby making training available to eligible persons preparing for new jobs. Today's grant will continue assistance not covered under the TAA program such as assessment, counseling, case management and other supportive services. National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary of Labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines.
